We recently completely an awesomely fast and diverse location portraiture shoot of Las Vegas big wig Van Heffner for Nevada Meetings + Events Magazine. (Digital version here, see page 48).

Mr. Heffner is President and CEO of the Nevada Hotel & Lodging Association, and one of the nicest men we’ve ever had the pleasure to photograph. We led Mr. Heffner around the Aria Hotel property for about an hour and a half, lighting and shooting in six different portrait environments. It was quite a feat, and he was relaxed throughout the whole process. Big thanks go to Aria’s Barbara Maisano and Shannon McCallum for making things happen at Aria for this shoot to be a success.

We recently had the pleasure of shooting four groupings of luxury products for a six page spread in Desert Companion Magazine, for their advertising client GGP.  It was an awesome gig with great stylists and art direction.  GGP, which runs three Las Vegas luxury retail venues including Fashion Show Mall and the Shoppes at Palazzo, filmed a behind the scenes video of the shoot.  It includes the luxury products, the photography equipment and some interviews with key players in the shoot, including Radiant Photography owner Ryan Weber.

Radiant recently had the opportunity and challenge to shoot the Oldenberg “Flashlight” sculpture on the UNLV campus for Desert Companion magazine.  I say challenge because the shoot required an evening shot of a matte black sculpture, lit only by mixed ambient lighting, on a college campus that has students walking about.  So I packed up my tilt-shift lenses one Saturday night and headed on down to UNLV to see what I could do.

Being a weekend evening, I didn’t have too many bodies walking through my images.  I was also able to pull long exposures to yank some color out of the sky, courtesy of the reflected light pollution from the Las Vegas Strip.  Now the challenge was getting a three-story matte black object to maintain detail and color fidelity from top to bottom.  The area was lit with a mix of high-pressure sodium vapor, mercury vapor and halogen light sources…a perfect white balance nightmare.  However I brought along some flash heads and a battery pack so I could at least fill the shadowy sculpture with some color correct fill light, right?  Well, kinda.  I did a bit of light painting, but with the intensity of the light needed to light the black monolith, there was just too much flash spill onto the surrounding trees and cement.  So I went the multi-exposure, multi-white balance route.

A series of exposures were made for the highlights all the way to the shadow details that I’d later tone map in Photoshop (no, I don’t use tone mapping software, as I prefer to do it manually layered in PS).  Same thing for the various white balances, although much of the scene was lit under high-pressure sodium vapor lamps which are nearly impossible to white balance, due to their spectral output.  It’s light nerd stuff I won’t get into here.   Anyway, back at the office I processed all the exposures and pulled an under-, over-, and properly exposed frame from each composition.  I then layered those and used masks to tonemap the final image, which has greater highlight and shadow detail than any single exposure I captured.

All in all a great challenge and fun image to work on.  The image below is the magazine layout and unfortunately is quite compressed, so the detail is lacking.  I’ll post up a better shot soon.

Our first product shot on the new Canon 5D Mark II body went very well. The cocktail shot, taken at Fusion Bar inside the Palazzo resort, was featured in this week’s Vegas Seven magazine. The greenish drink is called a Sun Burn and is amazingly different. It has cactus paddle and sage strained into Effen Vodka, some simple syrup, pineapple juice and carmelized bitters. Very refreshing and definitely a summer drink with its grassy notes.

The 5D body was awesome! Easy to transition from the Mark I body, better menu layout in my opinion, and the resolution is fabulous. I’ll be using it with the TS-E lenses for a two day architecture shoot starting tomorrow and will have more input on using the live view mode for focus preview with the tilt/shift lenses. I just finished some architecture shots at Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA, and even with the 17-40 L lens, the shots were amazing, so I’m sure the results with the TS-E lenses will just be phenomenal.

Anyway, when in Vegas, hit up Fusion inside Palazzo and try these drinks. Excellent stuff! Plus, Emilio, the drink’s creator and all-around awesome guy, gets to play with fire while carmelizing the bitters.

We did another cocktail on white background for Vegas Seven magazine. This time it’s Agent Orange at Downtown Cocktail Room and it’s delicious! Some Jameson whiskey, dash of Angostura orange bitters, and some other goodness, all topped off with some whipped cream. Awesome.
Fairly easy setup thanks to the basic glassware. Kick a bit of light through the back of the glass to light the liquid up a nice amber color and we’re ready to shoot.

Did another round of cocktail shots and an interior of Bar Moderno at Aria Resort for Vegas Seven magazine. Bar Moderno is a great little laid back place to grab a drink and people watch in the casino.
The interior was a bit of a challenge to light with rich, dark textures offset by bright drapes and flat screen televisions. Took about 20 minutes to light with two hot lights, a couple minutes to capture and we were on our way. Hopefully the PR folks dig the image and we get to work with them again. Had a fun time on this one.
